“As unemployment climbs, buying power and sales decline, inventories accumulate, investment opportunties recede, more layoffs are imposed, and recession deepens. For the big capitalists, however, recessions are not unmitigated disasters. Weaker competitors are weeded out and business is better able to resist labor demands, forcing workers to accept wage and benefit cutbacks in order to hang onto their jobs. A large reserve supply of unemployed workers helps deflate wages. Unions are weakened and often broken….
